ALL THE INSTRUMENTS AGREE: an exhibition or a concert is a two-day program of back-to-back live performances by over 25 local, national, and international sound artists, music collectives, art bands, and visual artists whose practices extend to the production of sound. Conceived as an exhibition in the form of a concert, the continuous program of performances will alternate between two outdoor stages in the Hammer courtyard from noon to 10 p.m. each day. Spanning a range of influences, genres, and styles, participating artists include industrial music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge; Cairo-based artist Hassan Khan, whose live-mixed multi-track work Taraban will be performed for the first time in the U.S.; and GLITTERBUST, a new project by Kim Gordon and Alex Knost. ALL THE INSTRUMENTS AGREE brings together a variety of disparate approaches to underscore the unruliness, temporality, and communal nature of musical and sonic performance as an art form that is inherently at odds with the conventions of exhibition and display while remaining essential to the production and social sphere of contemporary art.

ALL THE INSTRUMENTS AGREE is organized by Aram Moshayedi, curator, with January Parkos Arnall, curatorial assistant, Public Engagement.

This event will be streamed live online.

"A Contagion of Difference"
Featuring the work of Jay Riggio, Ace Farren Ford and Lance Glover

Saturday December 13 2014
Artists' reception from 6-9PM

Musical performance at 8PM by Rick Potts of "Dinosaurs With Horns" / L.A.F.M.S.

The Contagion of Difference

Lance Glover, Jay Riggio, and Ace Farren Ford work in the medium of collage aux cultural contagion. Their reordering of images and text merge high and low culture, the random and contrived, the personal and Universal. Since the early 20th Century, collage has rebelled against the art establishment and the discontinuity of culture brought on by new technologies. After a century, this artistic contagion continues to spread, virally and vitally.

"The practice of fine art collage can be traced to 1912, when Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque began affixing cut paper to their paintings, though its roots date back many hundreds of years. A century later, what does collage say to us? It seems that the shocking collision of images explored by the Cubists, Dadaists and Surrealists in response to technology and the pace of life in the 20th century is yet relevant. There is an unavoidable nostalgia in much of this work, as by its nature it culls images from the past, and yet the search for wholeness through the merging of fragments is all the more apropos in our increasingly fragmented world. These constructs may be seen as the recombinant DNA of the collective imagination."

Show runs until January 3rd 2015
