Le Forte Four - Bikini Tennis Shoes (reissue) LP

Artist:
Le Forte Four

Label:
Etats-Unis
Format:
LP

The origins of Le Forte Four are those of the Los Angeles Free Music Society itself. Chip Chapman joined forces with Rick Potts (and shortly thereafter Tom and Joe Potts), taking up the LAFMS name in 1974. Ultimately baptizing themselves Le Forte Four, they began threading imagined lines between John Cage and The Residents, Cecil Taylor and Henry Cow – generating sounds completely unlike any of these and anything since.

The inaugural release on the eponymous LAFMS imprint with only 200 copies pressed originally, Bikini Tennis Shoes is a staggering piece of anti-music that remains as refreshingly ground-clearing today as it was when it first appeared in 1975. Its 40 minutes (parceled out across nearly as many tracks) chart forays into free improvisation, Buchla misuse, filtered noise, begrudging and damaged melodic sorties (from the Star-Spangled Banner to Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring") and healthy doses of basement pablum.

Le Forte Four emerged out of the lethargic American '70s as a locus where, in their own words, "gamelans and ragas merged with serial and chance compositions finally melting together with instructional records and Beatles bootlegs." A wildly eclectic rummaging of postwar culture and 20th century sound, Le Forte Four's Bikini Tennis Shoes preempts punk's outsider ethos and DIY autodidactism.

Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on clear vinyl.

Scanner and Mike Kelley teamed up to produce Esprits de Paris for the Sonic Process exhibition at the Pompidou Center in Paris in 2002. Composed from anomalous sounds found on blank digital minidiscs "exposed" to various historically-loaded locales in Paris, this is a subtle and beautiful, one hour-long, electronic music composition that explores the "ghost in the machine" - a tribute to the pioneers of the "Electronic Voice Phenomena": Friedrich Jürgenson, Attila von Szalay, and Konstantin Raudive.

Points of Friction - Afterlife DNA Finger-Painting CD

Points of Friction formed in January of 1981, shortly after witnessing Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band perform live. Joseph Hammer, Damian Bisciglia, Tim Alexander, and Kenny Ryman were the core quartet though sometimes LAFMS founder Rick Potts would sit in, among others. Their first recording was a spontaneous affair. The group having no formal musical training (or even knowledge of “freely improvised music”) relied on their voices and whatever else was at hand--wire mesh, sheet plastic, an old guitar, etc. Gradually, the group acquired electric instruments, toy keyboards, multi-track tape recorders, pedal effects, etc. and moved towards a more processed sound direction, informed by groups such as Faust, Cluster, Nurse with Wound, Dome, This Heat, Can, AMM, Fripp and Eno, and Negativland. By 1984, Points of Friction had two cassette releases under their belts on Fredrik Nilsen’s LAFMS offshoot label Solid Eye. Their second release Sackcloth and Ashes was re-issued in 2002 on CD by Anomalous Records, and the group’s first recording from 1982 was reissued on CDR in 2004 by the L.A. based Spagyric label. After a 20 year hiatus, Points of Friction reformed in June 2004 and recruited LA native Mitchell Brown to the goon squad. Afterlife DNA Finger-Painting, their third official release, is the result of this reunion. They have since recorded more material and have returned to occasionally performing live.

Rick Potts (Saws) - s/t CD

Artist:
Rick Potts (Saws)

Saws.jpg

Label:
In Tone Music
Format:
CD

Saws is a cracked-groove-celestial-takeoff to the nether-regions of the Musical Saw. Bowed, struck, tweaked, dubbed and kissed, Saws do their business with electronic processing, hinged-neck guitar, spaced melody bass, squawky synths and crackling snare and cymbal. Big drums and bass guitar anchor these trips of spaced out musical saws, vintage synth skitter, expansive steel guitar echoes and hinged-neck guitar back-sass. Melodic bass lines driving the tonal mind-melt of the sonic ghoulash, take the listener into a region very accessible.

Performers: Rick Potts - musical saw, hinge-neck electric guitar, Steiner-Parker synthesizer, Dr. Sample, fake screaming rat, electronic Birdcaller, kalimba, saxxy, nose flute, crow call; Brian A. Rosser - Akai Headrush E1, Boss Dd-5, Ernie Ball volume pedal, Gibson Br-6, Roland Re-301, Mussehl & Westphal professional musical saw; Chris Guttmacher - drums, percussion; Rick Frystak - electric bass, virtual Mellotron.

Rick Potts (Sissy Spacek) – Sepsis CD

Artist:
Sissy Spacek

Label:
Second Layer (UK)
Format:
CD

“Large ensemble Sissy Spacek recordings featuring the cream of LA. The line-up: John Wiese, Mitchell Brown, Joey Karam (The Locust), Peter Kolovos, Rick Potts, Damion Romero, Corydon Ronnau and Shannon Walter (16 Bitch Pile-Up).

“All the source recordings used for Sepsis were taken from a group improv session recorded for the Dublab radio in 2008. The recordings from each individual channel were later chopped and rearranged into audio collages by Wiese without any regard to preserving group interaction. These collages were then layered into the final pieces you here on the disc. To simplify this: the tracks feature what was played but not how they played as a group. The group communication that was broken up has been worked into another beast entirely.

“The results are a beautiful set of electro-acoustic works that have been freed from any of the patterns that can develop through group improvisation. These tracks are at once disorientating and alien, yet constantly engaging. To draw comparisons to other acts would be lazy and compromising but I can say this wont go amiss on fans of Bernard Parmegianni, Morphogenesis, Furt, etc. One of the most streamlined and original Sissy Spacek recordings I’ve ever heard.

“Comes in 6-panel Ogun style digi-sleeve designed by John Wiese and includes photos from the original recording session. Limited edition of 500 copies.”—Second Layer

Romans - You Only Live Once CD

Artist:
Romans

romans-yolo.jpg

Label:
Warning Label
Format:
CD

The Romans were one of Los Angeles’ first super-groups with members of the budding art/punk scene sweeping Southern California in the early 80’s. Formed in the ashes of Human Hands and Monitor, and featuring members from LAFMS, Bpeople, Deadbeats, 45 Grave, Consumers, Tikis, and Green On Red, The Romans added a unique voice to the “LA Punk” movement. While the explosive chemistry of The Romans was short lived, with only two full-length LPs ever recorded (their second LP produced by Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate), band members went on to make rock history with Mazzy Star and Opal. On the debut release, The Romans were Mikey Borens, Pat Delaney, Juan Gomez, Keith Mitchell, and Michael Uhlenkott, and was engineered by the legendary Paul Cutler.

Digitally re-mastered from the original analog tapes under the supervision of founding member Juan Gomez, formerly of Human Hands and Doo-Dooettes among other LAFMS groups, this is the first time The Romans debut 1983 LP, “You Only Live Once” has ever been available on CD. In addition to the entire first LP there’s exclusive early demos, live tracks and ultra-rare soundtrack cuts from the 80’s horror cult classic “The Hideous Sun Demon” starring Jay Leno, rounding out this 21 track CD. “You Only Live Once” is equal parts of Punk, Surf and Psychedelic. The CD booklet includes original artwork, flyers, lyrics and nifty artifacts.

Smegma (Rock 'n' Roll Jackie/Pain Jerk) - Super Relaxed CD

Artist:
Rock 'n' Roll Jackie/Pain Jerk

Label:
Second Layer (UK)
Format:
CD

“Over a year in the making this is the first collaboration between Pain Jerk (Kohei Gomi) and Rock’n’Roll Jackie (Jackie Stewart of Smegma, The Tenses, etc). The source sounds were provided by Jackie and then Kohei obsessively worked these into the two long tracks you hear on this disc. This is by no means a conventional harsh noise record. The influence of the musique concrete masters of old echoes heavily throughout these tracks whilst still maintaining the playfulness and non-purism found throughout LAFMS recordings. Old sound effect record samples, TV recordings, Flower Travellin’ Bands guitar riffs and J-Pop drum beats are all included in the mix alongside Kohei’s synth sounds. This was recently described by long term LAFMS champion Takuya Sakaguchi as “high-velocity psychedelic electronic punk”, and that suits this well. Limited edition of 500 copies in 6-panel ogun digipack with full-colour artwork/collages from Jackie Stewart.”—Second Layer
